What is the retina?

Normal Eye

If the eye is like a camera, with a lens in front, then the retina is the film.

The retina is a thin, light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye, which converts images into optical signals that are sent to the brain.

The retina consists of several important parts:

  • The macula is the area in the central part of the retina, which helps you to clearly see objects in front of you.

  • The peripheral retina is the outer part of the retina surrounding the macula. It gives us peripheral vision (from the corner of the eye) and night vision.

  • In front of the retina is the vitreous cavity, filled with a gel-like substance.

FAQS

The retina is a thin layer of tissue at the back of the eye that is essential for vision. It captures light and sends visual signals to the brain. A healthy retina is crucial for clear and sharp vision. At K K Eye Institute, we help you protect your retina and offer state-of-the-art treatments for various retinal eye conditions.

Common retinal disorders include retinal detachment, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and retinopathy of prematurity. These conditions can significantly affect vision and require prompt medical attention.

Symptoms of retinal issues can include blurred or distorted vision, sudden flashes of light, floaters (small spots or strings in your vision), defects in the side vision, a shadow or curtain over part of your visual field, and sudden loss of vision.

Some common risk factors include diabetes, ageing, smoking, obesity, eye trauma, and a family history of retinal diseases.

We recommend our patients to see our retina experts at the earliest if you start noticing any of these symptoms.

Retinal conditions are diagnosed through a comprehensive eye examination. This may include visual acuity tests, dilated eye exams, retinal imaging tests, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and fluorescein angiography. These tests help our doctors at K K Eye Institute to examine the retina and identify any abnormalities.

Treatment options vary depending on the specific retinal condition. They can include laser therapy, intravitreal injections, Anti-VEGF agents, vitrectomy surgery, and lifestyle changes to manage underlying health issues like diabetes. Early diagnosis and treatment are key to preserving vision.

Preventive measures include regular eye exams, managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, protecting your eyes from UV light, maintaining a healthy diet rich in antioxidants, and avoiding smoking. Regular check-ups at K K Eye Institute can help detect retinal problems early and prevent serious vision loss.
